A common term that comes up with hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the hyperoxia-hypoxia paradox.
Really what this is, is these periods of increased and decreased pressures of oxygen. And as pressures of oxygen increase and decrease, it seems to create an accelerated effect on our cell signaling, especially with regard to sirtuin activation, cell cycle activation, DNA repair, epigenetic repair, and tissue regeneration.
What is confusing, though, is that there is never an actual amount of hypoxia. When people talk about this hyperoxia-hypoxia paradox, it's all in terms of relative hypoxia. Going from the extra amount of oxygen somebody is getting while they're in the chamber back down to normal amounts of oxygen creates a relative hypoxia, where we experience those benefits of hypoxia without the negative consequences of experiencing an actual hypoxic event.
