The greatest number of deaths and injuries from Haiti’s August 14 earthquake occurred in the country’s southernmost region, in Sud department. Hospitals and clinics were already scarce in remote areas of Sud, and the earthquake damaged or destroyed many of those facilities, as well as roadways, making it even more difficult for earthquake survivors to reach care quickly.
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) organized mobile clinics to bring health care to displaced people and hard-to-reach communities. “Very quickly we explored the most affected areas, which were the mountainous areas,” says emergency medical coordinator Bram Keijzer. “There are many wounded, and people cannot access drinking water and health care.” MSF is transferring people with severe injuries to functioning hospitals and continues to perform surgeries and provide post-op care in the general hospital in Les Cayes.
