Thousands of pupils celebrated returning to classrooms and playgrounds for the first time in six months today — giving their parents the freedom to go back to work.
The start of the school year was unlike anything seen before as youngsters lined up to wash their hands before entering classrooms that have been transformed to enable socially-distanced lessons.
For many children it was a morning of sheer joy, when they could finally play with friends again, even with strict safety and hygiene rules in place.
But there was a very different picture this morning at some key rail and Underground stations, where empty platforms and carriages revealed how many workers are yet to return to offices.
