The Croatian Bed & Breakfast
Built around 1910 this large, now abandoned house has been sitting empty and unmaintained for more than 15 years.
The foundation is in absolutely terrible shape, it is literally falling apart as you can see when we get to the basement. I attribute this rapid degradation to a few things, the first is the excessive use of salt (which) eats away at concrete as it ages. Second, with water likely being allowed to pool near the house and the regular freeze and thaw cycles of the area's harsh winters, it all amounts to a recipe for disaster. There is also extensive mold growing in many areas of the home, with peeling paint and the plaster walls are starting to fall apart as well.
This home which also operated as a bed and breakfast was owned by a Croatian couple named Branko and Hildegard. They had two daughters. There were numerous Croatian flags throughout the home, as well as both Canadian and a couple of German flags, hinting that they may also have German in their ancestry.
The house was a time capsule with everything left behind including antique furniture, a really nice couch, as well as a lot of smaller items from the 1980s including a whole wall of home recordings on VHS cassettes. Many photo albums were also left behind containing precious family photos. A fully stocked kitchen and even the beds were still made!
I am not sure who owns the home at this point in time but I am guessing that both of the daughters didn't want to or couldn't deal with it after their parents passing. Having found a calendar from 2006, the home has likely been abandoned and forgotten for over 15 years and given its very rough condition, it will likely never be lived in again.
