Today we show you a way to bed / reshape carbon motor brushes, in my case, because one of the brushes broke off (and I don't want to buy new ones). Bedding ensure that the contact faces of the motor brush matches the curve of the commutator (or slip ring) as, exactly as possible, so that no electrical overload of individual brush parts occurs. The method of bedding brushes is to put a long strip of abrasive cloth under the brushes, the abrasive cloth being then drawn backwards and forwards (for bi-directional machine), or in one direction only (direction of rotation for uni-directional machine). While bedding can be done for big motors with the brushes and commutator in place, sometimes, it is not possible to do so due to the construction of the machine (like here for this drill where the plastic housing stands in the way). I'm therefore building here a little jig that will allow me to do the brush reshaping externally, to still ensure that the motor brush is perfectly bedded.

- Abrasive cloth
- Rod with the same diameter than the commutator
- Screws
- Piece of wood
