Vegan Rice Paper Bacon
Ingredients:
• 6 sheets of rice paper
• 1/4 cup liquid coconut aminos
• 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
• 1 tablespoon liquid smoke
• 1 tablespoon agave syrup
• 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
• 1 teaspoon garlic powder
• 1 teaspoon onion powder
• 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
• 1/2 teaspoon smoke maple seasoning
• 1/4 cup water
• 1 tablespoon olive oil (plus more for frying)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Marinade:
In a medium bowl, whisk together the liquid coconut aminos, nutritional yeast, liquid smoke, agave syrup, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, smoke maple seasoning, water, and olive oil until well combined.
2. Hydrate and Marinate the Rice Paper:
Dip one piece of rice paper directly into the marinade for a few seconds until it softens but isn’t too sticky. Place it on a clean surface. Repeat with another piece and lay it on top of the first piece, pressing them together gently to create a thicker texture. Continue this process for all rice paper sheets.
3. Cut the Marinated Rice Paper:
Use a knife to cut the marinated rice paper into strips about 2 inches wide. Cut each strip into smaller pieces of your desired size.
4. Pan Fry the Rice Paper Bacon:
Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a non-stick or cast-iron skillet over medium heat. When the oil is hot, carefully place the marinated rice paper pieces into the skillet. Fry for about 1-2 minutes on each side, or until crispy and browned. Be careful as they can burn quickly.
5. Cool and Serve:
Remove the rice paper bacon from the skillet and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil. Let it cool for a few minutes. It will continue to crisp up as it cools. Enjoy your vegan bacon in sandwiches, salads, or as a side!
