Marine Big 5 Dyer Island
Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is situated a stone's throw away from the secluded beaches of Walker Bay Nature Reserve and the Gansbaai coastline. There is a significant marine ecosystem that occupies these waters known as the Marine Big 5.
'Marine Big 5' is a term coined to refer to the whales, seals, dolphins, penguins and sharks roaming the waters. Boat tours departing from Gansbaai offer an exceptional chance to view the Serengeti of the sea. A wildlife safari to view the Big 5 is a common experience throughout South Africa, but being able to view all five marine animals is not. The Marine Big 5 is a unique and thrilling encounter where you can witness the adorable nature of sprightly dolphins to the beastly elegance of a great white shark.
The Southern right whales flock to the South African coastline between July and December to mate and calve after a long journey from the Antarctic. The mothers and their young are an incredible spectacle as their jovial moods have them putting on riveting show for their audience. These gentle giants are driven by an innate curiosity that brings them within metres of boats and the rocky coastline. It is a life-changing opportunity to witness this spectacle, the Southern right whales have an endearing personality that will make you fall in love.
Then there is the opportunity to see great white sharks. Gansbaai is one of the few places in the world with such a prolific great white shark population for the entire year. Shark cage diving tour operators take to the seas every day to take tourists on a mind-blowing experience. The shark handlers manoeuvre the seal decoy with skilled precision to bring the mythical predators within inches of your face.
Grootbos has partnered with Marine Dynamics for the whale watching tours and shark cage diving tours because from their commercial funds they conduct research and conservation under Dyer Island Conservation Trust. Dyer Island is home to a colony of Cape fur seals and rare African penguins. These marine birds are almost a guaranteed sighting. The dolphins on the other hand are incredibly free-spirited and roam from place to place, they do love to surf the waves off the boat so keep your fingers crossed!
