In June I had the opportunity to trek in for endangered Mountain Gorillas in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest - a place that deserves its name, with thick vegetation, muddy ground, river crossings, and steep and slippery slopes. All the effort was worth it though once you stand among the biggest of the Giant Apes. There are only just over 1000 left on earth, and half of them live in the forest, with 21 of the around 50 families habituated. This group is the Oruzogo family, led by dominant silverback Bakwate.
