Zuda Castle, Tortosa:
Tortosa is a city located at the crossroad of the Via Augusta and the Ebro river, very close to its mouth; Of great strategic importance, fortifications were erected on this hill since Iberian and Roman times. In the time of Abd-al-Rahman III the Arabs turned it into a citadel. From those of Jaime I it was a royal residence. The perimeter corresponds, broadly, to the original castle that alternated square defensive towers with pieces of wall. The passing of the centuries forced to carry out adaptations according to the new military requirements, replacing battlements and towers with embrasures and parapets. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the outposts (modern bastions) were built in its extreme northwest.
Inside the enclosure various constructions were made: cisterns, warehouses and the powder magazine. In the great central well, or zuda, numerous underground galleries with dungeons and ovens converge.
During the Civil War the castle suffered serious destruction. In 1972 and after a thorough restoration, it became a National Tourism Parador.
