The Jewish holiday of Shavuot, which begins on May 25 in 2023, traditionally celebrates the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai, as well as the spring grain harvest. For many Holocaust survivors, such as Martin Weiss, the holiday is most beloved for its dairy-rich delicacies.
"There was special baking of special cakes, which my mother was very, very good at. She used to bake tortes, and all kinds of special cakes that you don't even see today.”
Martin grew up in the village of Veľká Poľana in the Carpathian Mountains in a family of nine children. In 1944, the Jewish population of the town was sent to the Munkács transit ghetto and from there to the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp. Martin was liberated from Gunskirchen concentration camp in Austria in May 1945. Of his immediate family, he and four of his siblings survived the Holocaust.
