It was during the 1847 Mexican-American War that the first war photographs were taken. Photography was a complex process in the early days, and it was almost impossible to capture an image outside of the most controlled environments. However, developments in chemistry and in the manufacture of glass lenses, established photography as a practical process from the 1850s onwards and allowed the emerging art of photography to capture more and more of history’s great events. Thus by 1914, the unfolding events engulfing Europe were soon captured on film for the whole world to sea and for the true horror of what was happening to be realised. In this the first of a new series, we are going to examine ten fascinatingly eerie images of the Great War and delve into their backstories. Welcome to Wars of the World.
