- One of the main reasons that law enforcement agencies use social media is for crime investigation. And in today's Consulting Column, I'm going to share with you 15 social media investigation tactics that police forces are currently using or if they're not, could be using.
So, the information that we share on social media is largely publicly available and many individuals don't actually shut down their privacy settings and have them quite open. So, in that regard, when we're sharing on social media we have to consider that it is in the public domain. So, one of the tactics that law enforcement agencies might use is to try and track down the IP address of individuals.
So, tracking that back to a device that they're using to access the internet. Obviously the social networks are vast and broad, whether it's TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, every action that we take online, leaves a reaction and it's almost impossible to have no trace of your activity.
So, law enforcement agencies are very good at scouting social media and they are, many law enforcement agencies create fake profiles in order to be there as anonymous investigators. Thirdly, who we are connected to on social media makes for very interesting reading for law enforcement agencies because we could be guilty by association or in fact by accident, our friends could call us out.
Now, I don't know why I'm saying us in this regard and putting myself into the wheel of criminals, but you know what I mean.
