Martim Codax was probably a Galician minstrel, active during the 13th century, possibly linked to Vigo, in medieval times, it was just a small town in Rías Baixas (Ría de Vigo), which is repeatedly sung about in his compositions. In this "Cantiga de amigo" (friend song), the maiden encourages her lovely sister to go to the sanctuary of Vigo, where the sea is fierce, in order to look at the waves. In fact, this journey is only a pretext to be with her friend, who will also go there as she confesses, now addressing her mother.
In fact, the practice of pilgrimages to sanctuaries reflects a double value between the sacred and the profane. Also, the sea, due to its magical affinity with life, contributes to an extraordinary configuration of the meeting of Heaven and Earth. Thus, the presence of the sea as a physical space, serves as a background for the amorous encounter between the maiden and her friend.
