Seasoned Perilla (Sesame) Leaves
If you'd never had perilla leaves, you should check it out! It's actually part of the mint family and has a bit of a herbal and spicy flavor. It's frequently used in it's raw form as wraps for Korean BBQ.
In this video, I'm going to show you how to make it into a delicious side dish.
The marinade will wilt the perilla leaves and that is exactly what it is supposed to do. In this form perilla leaves go great with rice and other Korean Dishes.
Ingredients:
50-60 Perilla leaves
Sauce
8 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon sesame oil
2 teaspoons Korean chili powder
4 teaspoons sugar
2 garlic cloves, minced
1-2 scallions, finely chopped
1/2 tablespoon sesame seeds
Instructions:
Rinse perilla leaves under cold water, pat dry, and set aside.
Make the sauce by mixing all the ingredients in a bowl.
In a container, layer every 1 to 2 leaves with a small scoop of sauce, evenly distributed. Continue layering until all leaves are seasoned.
Cover and place in refrigerator overnight.
* If you want to eat them the same day, steam the seasoned perilla leaves with a tablespoon of water in pan with lid on for a few seconds.
