I’m sure a lot of you who follow me, or have found me, will know that Joe Rogan had Gary Brecka from 10x Health on his podcast last week.
I was pretty excited to see Brecka and Rogan on the same podcast and shooting the shit because I’ve seen some other clips of Brecka and 10x health, and I thought - cool, this guy is talking about some of the same shit that I talk about. But after listening to him struggle through this podcast with Rogan, I was pretty disappointed.
Unfortunately while very high profile, Gary was a bit of a disaster in much of the information he shared on the episode. Especially when discussing methylation, he demonstrated a flawed understanding of the application of functional genetics to individualized health.
Y’know I can appreciate that Rogan’s bringing awareness to options, resources and information out there that is relevant and current if not cutting-edge for people looking to optimize health, but let’s unpack this trainwreck shall we?
In this video:
// Brecka takes an over-simplistic understanding of methylation and insinuates that methylation is the be-all-end-all for conversion or activation of nutrients we take into our bodies.
// Brecka's bright spot in the interview is when he talk about genetically related diseases (especially those related to diet, lifestyle and nutrient intake) within families.
// Brecka apparently fails to connect homocysteine with glutathione.
// Brecka glorifies trimethylglycine (TMG) and forgets that 3 other vitamins are essential for the homocysteine cycle.
// Brecka tries to reduce and generalize everyone's health, to methylation, the MTHFR, MTR, and MTRR genes with a brief mention of COMT (The Warrior Gene).
// Brecka suggests against decades of rigorous scientific literature that folic acid doesn't help prevent neural tube defects, and doesn't even mention anemia, iron deficiency, B12 insufficiency, protein insufficiency as possible reasons underlying postpartum depression.
// Brecka insinuates that activated folic acid deficiency is the only reason why ADHD is a thing.
Let's just say that this isn't my favourite of Joe Rogan's podcasts. C'mon guys, be better.
I'm just getting started talking about functional genetics here on my channel, but if you want a deep dive into the functional genetics of Vitamin B12, here's a good place to start:
Vitamin B12 - Normal levels aren't good enough - the genetics of B12.
