In a difficult year of the COVID-19 pandemic, floods, swarms of locusts & instability in some parts of the world -the UN World Food Programme (WFP), which provides life-saving food relief to millions across the world, won the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize.
But as the WFP marked this big achievement, challenges to the world’s food security remain a stark and daily reality; particularly in Africa where over half of the world’s acutely food insecure people live. Millions more on the continent are facing the same risk in the wake of recurrent and emerging challenges.
So what are the interventions in mitigating hunger? And what are governments and relief agencies in Africa doing to find lasting solutions?
