I have made documentaries and done hundreds of interviews that focus on American teenagers, students, baby boomers, and what they did or didn't do in the 1960s. It was certainly a decade of rebellion for many. But not for all as just about 50% of the baby boom generation says that they did not participate in the events of the 60s. I have a hard time explaining to younger folks just how radical some people became in the USA in 1968 and 1969. People who I interviewed at that time felt that violence was justified and they wanted to change the entire American system into… I'm not sure what.
Some subscribers ask about what was happening in Europe at the same time and European subscribers consistently comment that they had their own 1968 student rebellions and violent protests. This clip gives a sense of those protests and how aggressive they were between students turning more radical and more angry and police being charged by their governments to hold the line and stop the students. This clip reveals protests in England, UK, Germany, Italy and France but protests also existed in Spain and other EU countries.
Subscribers comment regularly on how this changed society and education for the good and for the bad. It's difficult to be neutral on these issues. As I see it, some things had to change, but other things needed not to change that were changed as a result of these rebellions.
I have also interviewed people who were just trying to go to college to study and get a degree during those years. They felt shut out of their schools when they just wanted to learn and move on with their lives.
