In an interview conducted in 2020, I spoke with Happiness, one of the returnees in Edo state. She and her friends tell me some of the horrible things they saw enroute Libya.
Happiness was a mother of three until she lost one of her children: her one-year old child, her last child.
The pain and financial struggle made her leave her two children here in Nigeria, she left in search of her husband and potentially, a better life for her and her family.
But the grass is never greener on the other side.
Her horrific story of abuse echoes on the lips of the other returnees.
They speak on being starved, beaten, sexually abused – kidnapped and traded time and time again as slaves along the Nigeria- Niger-Libya route.
