GANGSTA and Black Lagoon have been compared a few times in the comments here. GANGSTA is usually mentioned as an anime for the
Black Lagoon fans among us who want more of the semi-realistic action, dark character arcs, and nihilism the 2006 anime provided, usually through Rock and Revy. Nico and Worick, the stars of the 2015 series, attack some similar thematic and plot elements, however I think the comparisons end mostly on the surface. It shares the intense action, has a city like Roanapur, and focuses on the darkness of life... but the promise mostly ends there...
GANGSTA may share some of the framing of our channel's most popular anime, but it erased so much of what makes it one of the best. Rock and Revy drive forward the plot, but not always through success. The story often slows down to focus on their relationship, as one gives up on the light, and the other seeks it out. From their very introduction this groundwork is laid out, and every interaction builds on it. Dutch and Benny, the rest of the crew, serve as the 3rd option, those who simply exist, rather than seek purpose. The 2015 counterpart lacks most of these elements, choosing to pinpoint and reveal hyper specific and intricate backstories for each, which clashes with the idea of meaninglessness that presents through the gritty framing. This issue, and more we'll discuss here, make it a very unfair comparison to draw...
