13 January 2022. My partner has family connections with the Stonybatter area of Dublin and so when I stumbled across the dots for this slip jig online, I was intrigued to see how it played.
Hmmm... I found the tune rather confusing to start with. In the first place, there's a similarity to The Butterfly (in fact it's suggested that The Butterfly is derived from this tune) which meant I was pre-empting - wrongly! - some of the phrases. However the tune also has a distinct staccato/accented feel which again took a little while to embed. This is possibly because, I've learned, that the tune is derived from or is a version of a 3/2 tune called "Bob And Joan" or "Bobbin' Joan". I must confess that I wouldn't know a 3/2 tune if it stood up in my soup!
