After almost half a century of a fragile oligarchic Republic, the Crisis hit Brazil, destroying the oligarchic ties between the states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais, which controlled the country's politics.
The first non-oligarchic president was assassinated under suspicious circumstances and a vanguardist movement of military men rallied around Getúlio Vargas, marching in Rio (then the capital) and declaring him the provisional leader.
The two main parties were the ANL, with Communist tendencies, and the AIB, inspired by French (also Portuguese) integralism. The first opposed Vargas, and the second supported him (for a while).
After an alleged communist coup attempt by the ANL, Vargas dissolved all parties and declared a dictatorship, called "Estado Novo". This angered the AIB, who attempted to take over the presidential house and seize power, but after having successfully invaded the Presidential House and being in direct fire with the President himself, the coup attempt failed and the AIB was dissolved.
After the Second World War, he left power, as several Nationalist governments were in ruins or in crisis, but he returned again, this time democratically (Vargas was the only dictator to be elected by the people after being deposed).
After a massive campaign against his working-class government, conservative opponents stormed the Presidential House to demand his impeachment, but after saying "They won't get me out of this place alive", he killed himself, putting an end to his life. (The first president who actually did something for the country, and perhaps the last).
Many say that he did not commit suicide, but was murdered by his opponents who wanted a government supported by the USA (which only happened in 1964 with the military coup), but the judgment, whether he was murdered or not, is not up to me.
