“What we call dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is building a life worth living and being present, and to me that's such a gift to be a part of.”
"I'm Laura Schuster Effland and I'm a licensed clinical social worker and I'm the executive director of our ERCC Washington site. At ERC Washington we have eating disorder treatment for children, adolescents, and adults in both residential partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) programs.
When it comes to eating disorder diagnosis we specialize in anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), along with the comorbidities. So to support the individual that may have a history or a current substance abuse we do a lot of psychoeducation around that.
Along with mood and anxiety disorders, we really like to incorporate dialectical behavior therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and exposures to support a patient through many different stages of their recovery.
When I think about ERC Washington's staff I think of heart. Going to work is something that is a part of their lives, it's not just clocking in and clocking out. It's about being a part of the patient's experience and seeing them through to recovery.
In both of our locations we really want to give patients and families access, not only to getting to our locations, but also to being a part of the treatment whether you're family or friends or a loved one.
We also want to provide access to things around us, so we do a lot of outings and getting out into the community and using learned skills. Really trying to find ways to kind of get back into the life that you lived outside of treatment.
To be able to be a part of someone's courageous journey and being asked for that support. Helping them find that ability to be vulnerable, I just feel appreciative to be a witness of that and to be a part of that."
