Fruit Flies and fungus gnats are common indoor pests many homeowners encounter. They’re both tiny filth flies that may look similar at a glance, but proper treatment methods for each are very different.
At a glance, fruit flies and fungus gnats look similar. They’re both tiny flies that are about ⅛ of an inch in length.
The differences become clear when you’re able to examine them closely.
First, fruit flies are tan in body color while fungus gnats are dark brown to black. Fruit flies have stouter bodies, while fungus gnats have more narrow abdomens. Finally, fruit flies have large red compound eyes, while fungus gnats have black compound eyes.
Fruit flies stay near warm and wet areas with organic material. Drains, drains with garbage disposals, fruits and vegetables left to sit on a countertop, or open trash receptacles create ideal breeding sites for fruit flies.
Fungus gnats feed on decaying matter in soil. Damp soil in outdoor gardens or within indoor potted plants are hot spots for fungus gnat activity.
First, let’s go over how to control fruit flies. The first step is to sanitize your home. By keeping your place clean, you eliminate their breeding sites. Seal any loose foods, Clean up after your pets, wipe down countertops and floors with warm water, and take out the trash regularly. Consider using trash cans with lids if you aren’t already.
Next, use Forid Drain Gel Cleaner to break down organic waste buildup in drains. Apply 4 fluid ounces per drain by pouring around the lip so it runs down the edges. Repeat this process daily for 5 to 7 days.
Now that all breeding sites have been addressed, the fruit flies will have nowhere to breed and will die off over time. For immediate relief, use Pyrid Aerosol to knock down any flies you see. Pyrid is a powerful botanical spray made with pyrethrins and a synergist. Apply this product as a space spray at a rate of 1 to 3 seconds of spraying per 1,000 cubic feet. Flies that make contact with the aerosol will be knocked down immediately.
Next, let’s go over fungus gnat control. If you have a fungus gnat problem, you may be overwatering your plants. Soil retains excess water and creates an environment that promotes fungal growth around the plant’s roots, thus attracting fungus gnats. You can better control the amount of water your plants receive by applying water with a spray bottle. Another tip to reduce moisture is to set a slice of raw potato on the surface of the soil. This will absorb some of the soil’s moisture, but remember to remove it before it rots so you don’t invite more fungus gnats.
Next, we recommend you set up a Musca-Stik Fly Trap near where you’ve seen fungus gnat activity. This is a non-toxic sticky fly trap that uses pheromones to attract flies. Pour the pheromones into the base and set the trap in place. The trap will draw fungus gnats in the area and trap them on the glue.
If you have fungus gnats outdoors, you can treat your plants with a residual insecticide like Supreme I/T. Supreme I/T is a liquid insecticide concentrate made with bifenthrin. Once applied, it creates a residual barrier that works to treat insects for up to 90 days. Just mix the labeled rate of 0.25 to 0.5 fluid ounces of product to make 1 gallon of solution to treat over 1,000 square feet. Apply your finished solution over your ornamentals and the soil beneath. Don’t forget to treat underneath the leaves as well. Adult fungus gnats that make contact with the spray or its residual will have their nervous systems impacted and will die in several hours.
