In the 12th century, after the King of France betrayed the English crown by taking back parts of Normandy, Richard the Lionheart decided to build an impregnable castle along the Seine to protect his remaining lands from Philip II of France. The construction began in October 1197 and was completed in less than two years. King Richard named it “Gaillard” to describe the castle’s strength and extremely innovative architecture.
