Hearing is generally divided into conductive hearing loss and sensory neural hearing loss. That means there is a pathway that conducts sound from the outward eardrum through a middle ear mechanism called the oscicular chain into the inner ear. The whole system from the outer ear to the inner ear, that is the cochlear is called as the conductive system and through the cochlear nerve into the brain is called as the nervous system. Depending on which part of the whole auditory pathways is affected, the hearing loss can be either conductive or sensory neural or certain patients it can be a combination of both, then it can be called as mixed hearing loss.
