Recently, I had a thought-provoking experience. After a challenging call with an unhappy customer, I found myself reacting negatively to an email from a person on our sales team. Although the email was innocuous, my reaction was colored by my agitated state of mind. This incident led me to reflect on how our personal experiences and emotional states can influence our interpretation of texts, such as the Bible.
Often, our understanding of the Bible is shaped by our life experiences and social upbringing. For instance, the concept of a forgiving God or God as a father figure may be difficult to grasp for those without a paternal presence in their lives. Without a tangible example, the scriptures’ portrayal of a father’s love can seem abstract.
When we are forgiven, there is a transformation occurs within us. However, our personal narratives and past experiences can filter how we read and understand the Bible. It’s crucial to approach the Word of God with an open mind, allowing it to guide us rather than projecting our interpretations onto it. The Bible aims to teach us how to live, and it’s important that we let it speak to us, shaping our understanding through its teachings rather than through the lens of our subjective experiences.  It’s important to consider that texts like the Bible have been interpreted in various ways throughout history, influenced by different cultures, languages, and personal experiences. The way individuals relate to to the can be deeply personal and is often shaped by their own life’s narrative and worldview.
Let’s delve deeper into this reflection. Often, we acknowledge that the teachings of the Bible are directives we ought to follow. Yet, we sometimes rationalize our avoidance of these teachings, believing they were meant only for the era in which they were written, not for the complexities of our modern lives. This mindset can be further entrenched by prevailing worldviews that may conflict with biblical teachings, such as fixed notions of gender identity.
However, the essence of the Bible transcends time and cultural shifts. When Jesus proclaimed, “I am the way, the truth, and the life,” it was a definitive statement of universal and timeless relevance. Imagine if Jesus were questioned by Pontius Pilate in today’s context, where truth is often seen as subjective. The question might be, “What is your truth?” This underscores the challenge we face: to approach the scriptures with a readiness to apply their wisdom to our lives, not as historical artifacts but as living guidance meant for all, including us.
Embracing the Bible’s teachings requires courage to step beyond our preconceptions and personal experiences. It invites us to see the Bible not as a document frozen in time but as a dynamic source of inspiration that is applicable to everyone’s life, here and now.

James 1:22-25. It emphasizes the need to be doers of the Word, actively incorporating its teachings into our daily actions and decisions:

“But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was.”

This passage encouraged self reflection and commitment to live according to the principles taught in the scriptures. Making them a tangible part of our life.It’s a reminder that the true value of the Word is realized when it’s put into practice, shaping our actions and character.

Heavenly Father, in the sacred name of Jesus, we approach Your presence at this moment, seeking a deeper comprehension of the divine inspiration behind the Scriptures. We recognize that the words of the Bible are not solely penned by human hands but are imparted through Your Holy Spirit. We are grateful, O Lord, for the privilege of accessing Your Word, a treasure not readily available to all. Help us to appreciate the profound blessing of serving You and to embrace the transformative power of the Scripture, making it alive and active within us, sharper than any two-edged sword. May it guide us to areas in our lives that fall short of Your glory, and inspire us to emulate Your likeness. We dedicate this time to You, in Jesus’ name, amen.
