This abandoned prison, once known as "hell on earth," is famous for its reported paranormal activity, attracting ghost hunters and thrill-seekers from around the country. Located in Moundsville, West Virginia, it has gained a reputation for its dark past, housing some of the most notorious and dangerous criminals in the region. Operational from 1876 until its closure in 1995, the West Virginia Penitentiary was designed in the Gothic Revival style, closely resembling a medieval fortress.
Life inside was harsh and brutal. Inmates lived in small, cramped cells and faced extreme disciplinary measures. The prison was the site of numerous executions, with a total of 94 men meeting their end in the electric chair or by hanging.
