A reliable quality inspection system for automobile body resistance spot welding is very important to ensure the soundness of individual resistance spot welds. By applying a robot-based 3D scanning (MetraSCAN 3D) or 3D vision system, a technology has been developed to automatically extract and recognize individual spot welds from multiple resistance spot welds that exist in car body parts. In particular, it was possible to classify normal and abnormal (including small nugget size) welds using machine learning technology on the automatically recognized 3D indentation data of resistance spot welds.
