For questions or business inquiries, please email me at justin@redcreativefilms.com I’ve been a Sony shooter for the past 4 years, absolutely love their cameras, the look and everything. However, I also love the canon color science. You hear it all the time! “Canon has the best color science.”
I also know there’s a profile out there called EOSHD, which is a picture profile set up for Sony cameras to emulate Canon colors. Well.. I tried it. Actually did a top and bottom comparison using those settings on my IG last week, and I have to say - I was not impressed. There was this weird blue tone on my cabinets in the background, and the skin tones just didn’t seem right.
Now I know this is pretty much impossible considering they are completely different brands, but I wanted to find some in camera settings for Sony that would get AS close as possible to looking like Canon. Without having to color correct in post.
It tested almost all the combinations for Gamma and Color mode from Standard profile aka PP off, Cine profiles, Slog, Movie, Still, S.Gamut, and so on.
My goal was to find a profile combination that matched PRETTTY close, especially as far as skin tones, and then further tweak the other settings like Black level, color phase & depth to fine tune it.
What I found was HLG3 paired with Color mode Rec 709 got me pretty close on the skin tones. Then I just needed to adjust the black level [aka contrast], color phase & depth.
The tough part about all this is I noticed I would tweak a setting, record, and then compare the 2 on my computer and nothing would be different. So I found that I would have to turn picture profile OFF, then go back into it and select the profile I was testing for Sony to let the profile update or reset or something idk.
Here are the settings I found give the best “Canon” look [of course nothings going to be perfect]:
Black level -15
Gamma HLG3
Saturation +7
Color mode: 709
Color phase -2
Depth
R -2
G -1
B -2
C -2
M +2
Y -3
Detail -7
What was funny was I would nail the look between both cameras super good in one setting, then as soon as I changed settings something would be off…
So What I’ve found was you can get somewhat similar results, but if you really want canon colors… just go buy a canon. It’ll save you a lot of time and energy, unless you’re like me and love the challenges of tweaking and testing camera settings XD
