Ellora caves is one of the most popular UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES in India, designation came in 1983. Ellora caves are also known as VERUL. These are a group of Hindu , Buddhist and Jain caves. The British army discovered these caves in 1819. Ellora caves are much older than Ajantha caves. Ellora is also world famous for the largest single monolithic excavation in the world, the great kailasa , cave no 16.
The 34 caves are actually structures excavated out of the vertical face of the Charanandri hills . These caves are dedicated to
1. Hindu (17 caves ) ---(13-29)
2. Buddhist (12 caves)---(1-12)
3. Jain (5 caves)---(30-34)
Ellora caves are closed on Tuesdays. The best to visit Ellora caves is during November to March.
MSRTC operates bus tours to Ellora caves in AC Volvo coaches. The guided tour buses depart the central bus stand in Aurangabad in the morning and cover other attractions on the route. Alternatively you can go for the regular state run buses.
