Convenient and effective
This is the most convenient, effective downrigger release that I've found for salmon fishing. You do have to be careful, though, not to let it hit the downrigger pulley on the way up, or it could pop off and you'll lose it to the big green toolbox.
These are easy to clip onto the cable at any location - I like to run one about 5 or 10 feet above the cannonball, so that if the cannonball hit the bottom, the fishing line and terminal tackle is above that and is less likely to snag up.
