Artwork by Take Me Back Pirate Radio Archives. Recorded on Sunday 19th October 1997, Kool FM 94.5, broadcasting to London and its surrounding counties. DJ Wildchild teamed up with MC Skibadee and they both known for raising the roof of nights like "Thunder & Joy" @Raw Club, Great Russel Street London W1. She was and still is a prolific name in the old school Jungle and Drum & Bass scene. Wild Child was Kool FM's only Drum & Bass female act in the 90s. The station later saw more female DJs join with likes of DJ Law.
She went on to set up her record label in 2004, Wildstyle Recordings and worked with music promotions companies.
It is fair to say that the majority of the scene was dominated by men and very few female artists broke through. That's not to discredit the pioneering female acts, like: DJ Rap (Proper Talent Records), DJ Kemistry (RIP) & DJ Storm (Metalheadz), Elizabeth Troy (Greater Love), Lady Cyrus (Rude FM), Lady ST & Lady Dyer & Lady Sweetie (Rinse FM) along a many others. But they were a small proportion of women at the time that were involved.
These female acts inspired the next generation of MCs, DJ and Producers, not just on Drum & bass circuit but for the rest of the UK underground music scene. The Drum & Bass scene now shares a different landscape to that of the 90s. The Garage and Grime music scenes now host a wider range of female artists. Though these stories are of a pastime, it essential we remember women's contribution in the Drum & Bass scene.
