STORYLINE:
Some people on the streets of Stockholm expressed optimism about the future on Monday morning after the centre-right opposition won Sweden's national election.
Employment played a large role in the election campaign with the opposition claiming not enough work was created despite booming economic growth.
Some voters seemed to agree.
"We need to get more jobs and the Alliance is focusing on the jobs," one woman said in central Stockholm on Monday.
Social Democratic Prime Minister Goran Persson had said Sweden's social model - a market economy blended with a high-tax welfare state - was at stake in the election.
However, the opposition led by Fredrik Reinfeldt's Moderate Party insisted it would not dismantle the system but help it survive by promoting jobs over welfare handouts.
The results showed Reinfeldt's Moderate Party with 26 percent, a strong gain from 2002 when it won only 15 percent of the vote.
With 99.7 percent of districts counted, the four-party opposition alliance led by Reinfeldt had 48.1 percent of the votes, compared with 46.2 percent for the Social Democrats and their two supporting parties.
It was the Social Democratic Party's worst election result in decades and ended 12 years of leftist rule in Sweden.
After taking over the party leadership in 2003, Reinfeldt, 41, steered the party toward the centre by toning down its conservative polices.
Persson was to hand in his resignation Monday.
