Something different to my usual jaunts around the Lake District. Visiting South Wales for pre Christmas familiy stuff I take a day away to run the infamous Fan Dance.
A fitness test that candidates for UK Special Forces must pass at the beginning of UKSF Selection. It is a 15 mile route up and over Pen Y Fan the highest peak in the Brecon Beacons. This is an 'out and back route' where Pen Y Fan is summited twice. On the return route you must tackle the infamous Jacobs Ladder, Pen Y Fan's steep ascent on the South East ridge.
The test is an individual effort where you must use the route led by the Directing Staff who set a fast pace. Candiates must carry a bergan (rucksack) weighing around 35-40lbs on top of which is the weight of your water, food and weapon. The time limit is 4 hours 10 minutes.
