Thanks for joining us once again at the Merriam Pianos YouTube channel, and if it’s your first time here, welcome! Today, we’ll be covering Stu Harrison’s favourite digital pianos available for under $1,000 USD in 2020.
One of the biggest stories of 2020 in the piano industry has been the complete lack of availability from virtually all manufacturer’s on many different instruments. For the purposes of this video, we’ll mostly be looking at instruments that are currently available, or projects to be available for the Christmas season.

Casio PX770 and PX870
These two models are a few hundred dollars apart in price, but both represent some of the best value in the market today. The PX870 packs 40 watts of speaker, nicely weighted and textured keys, as well as thick piano samples that give it a great range of complexity and dynamics. The cabinet is solid, and the Chordana app is a free add-on that works with mobile devices as a great learning companion.
The PX770 scales back some of the power and complexity of the tone, but it still delivers the exact same quality of cabinet and action. As of early Nov 2020, this is a unit with plenty of availability for holiday shoppers.
Kawai KDP70 and KDP110
The Kawai KDP series instruments have been some of the top selling digital pianos for quite some time, and for good reason. The KDP70 stands on its own for quality speakers, action and a true Kawai EX sample set. You can essentially think of the KDP70 as the ES110 in a home digital piano cabinet. Fortunately, the KDP70 hasn’t suffered the same inventory shortages that the KDP110 has.
If you can find a KDP110, in my opinion this instrument continues to be the outright specifications leader in this quality class. With individual 88 note sampling, 40 watt amp, bluetooth connectivity and more, the KDP110 is hard to beat. Due to a combination of demand and manufacturing shortages the KDP110 is tough to come by, so if you’re watching this in early Nov 2020 and need something right away, best to look elsewhere.
The ES110 would have been included on this lift, but given that it’s availability is even more precarious, it was omitted.
Yamaha DGX660
The DGX660 is a well rounded, all-in-one unit. It’s got auto accompaniment, capable speakers, and a great selection of sound and features. The instrument has been available for a few years so the GHS action perhaps a little bit behind its peers in terms of sensitivity and feel, so it’s probably better suited to folks who already play and are looking for a secondary instrument with the specific features you’ll find here. As far as I know, the DGX660 is still generally available.
Casio CDP-S350
You can think of the CDP-S350 as a lighter, less expensive version of the DFG660 with a similar musical punch. The S350 has an updated action that feels great, along with hundreds of quality sounds that could be used in professional settings. There’s lots of potential distractions on this instrument in the forms of features, so it’s probably not ideal for beginners who may lose focus due to all of the buttons.
Roland FP10
My last choice on this list has been a favourite of mine since it came out. While it might be light in terms of features, it delivers the absolute best combination of piano action for the price. If tone and touch is top of mind, the FP10 is in my opinion far and wide the best value option available.
We hope you found this video helpful. Thank you for watching!
