In 1969, the Young Lords occupied the People's Church in East Harlem to provide services to the community that they felt were not being sufficiently provided. Those 11 days would go on to change America's perception of Puerto Ricans as the young radicals set out to mobilize their community in the face of oppression. "It ain't just East Harlem in this church," Young Lord member Pablo Yoruba Guzman said as he addressed a crowd at The People's Church. "We relate to an international struggle."
