SL1 / SL1P / SL1K
Slip 1 stitch purl wise, Slip 1 stitch knit wise. SL1 or SL1p means you will slip one (or more if the number is different) stitch from one needle to the other as if to purl without working it. So the needle is inserted from the right to the left in the front of the stitch. Unless otherwise instructed there is no change to the location of the working yarn strand. If the pattern simply has SL1 you will slip 1 purl wise and keep the working yarn in the same location as before. By doing so you keep the orientation of the stitches so they do not become twisted.
When you slip one knit wise in a knit stitch you will change the orientation of the stitch. By taking the needle and inserting it into the stitch from the left to the right the stitch twists. Which can create wonderful patterns especially when combined with yarn placement (WYIB, WYIF).
