It all started on May 26 with the arrest of two men, including one who is a Muslim, for allegedly trying to ‘abduct’ a minor Hindu girl in Purola town in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district. Soon members of right-wing groups were seen meeting Hindu landlords in the town and asking them to get shops and houses run by Muslims "vacated". Communal tensions have been escalating quickly in the area since. On May 29, when some of the Muslim shopkeepers of the town went to check their shops, they saw notices pasted on their shutters asking them to leave or “prepare for consequences”. They were given a deadline of June 15 to flee or “face action”.
