The haunting whoop of the spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) is one of the iconic sounds of the African bush at night. This vocalisation allows hyenas to communicate over long distances and to keep in touch with their fellow clan members.
There is a lot of information encoded in the whoops or howls, and if you listen carefully you will notice a lot of variety in tone, timbre, length and number of repetitions. I haven't had a chance to study these calls in much detail, but as I listen and collect more and more recordings, I start to hear subtle nuances and differences.
