The Minister of Fisheries and aquaculture development, Elizabeth Afoley Quaye has stressed the resolve of her ministry and the fisheries commission to combat unapproved, unreported, and unregulated fishing (IUU) in the country.
Speaking in Accra at a workshop on the fight against IUU in Ghana, she assured Ghanaians, that the ministry is seeking the most effective ways of dealing with it and ameliorating its impacts on fisheries, the aquatic environment, and fishery business.
It is estimated that about one-third of fish caught globally happens under circumstances described as unregulated, and unreported, and is valued to cost about 10 billion euros in lost revenue.
There is also extensive damage to fisheries ecosystems and horrendous abuse of human labour in fishing.
The phenomenon leads to economic losses; depletion of fish stocks; destruction of fish and aquatic habitats; threatens food and livelihood security, survival of coastal communities, and long-term sustainability of fisheries.
Speaking at the workshop, Minister of Fisheries and aquaculture development, Elizabeth Afoley Quaye stressed, that Ghana has since the adoption of a national plan of action to combat IUU, been aggressively implementing the intended actions.
She noted that combatting IUU is a shared responsibility domestically among agencies and internationally among states, and called for a concerted effort in fighting it.
