Hey there, history buffs and nature enthusiasts! 🌿 Ever wondered about the rich history behind Tres Hermanos Ranch? Join me as I delve into the captivating story of this land, dating back before it officially became a ranch in the 1910s.
### 📜 Early History
Did you know that even though indigenous people didn’t actually live on the ranch, they relied heavily on the local flora and fauna? These resources supported their villages, which are now the cities of Chino, Pomona, and La Puente.
### 🌾 Spanish and Mexican Eras
During the Spanish and Mexican periods, this land was public and used for grazing by the Mission San Gabriel. It later became part of private ranches. One notable ranch was Los Nogales, granted in 1840 to José de la Luz Linares. Eventually, Los Nogales expanded to what we now know as Tres Hermanos Ranch, owned by the prominent Vejar family from Pomona.
### 🐄 Anglo Owners and Livestock Farming
In the 1870s, new owners like Wilson Beach, George Butler, Charles Wright, and Jane Lynch started using the ranch for raising livestock well into the 20th century.
### 🛢️ Dreams of Oil and Division
In 1907, Pittsburgh capitalist Walter F. Fundenberg purchased Los Nogales, hoping to strike oil. When that didn’t pan out, the land was divided into two parts in the 1910s.
### 🏞️ Foundation of Diamond Bar
Frederick F. Lewis took over the western part, establishing Diamond Bar Ranch, which laid the foundation for the city of Diamond Bar.
### 🌟 The Tres Hermanos Story
The eastern part was bought by three locals: Harry Chandler, William B. Scott, and William R. Rowland. They called themselves "Tres Hermanos" or "Three Brothers." They not only raised cattle but also used the ranch as a retreat.
### 🔄 Change of Ownership and Conservation
Fast forward to 1978, Tres Hermanos was sold to the City of Industry. After various development proposals, a landmark agreement in 2019 created the Tres Hermanos Conservation Authority, uniting the cities of Diamond Bar, Chino Hills, and Industry to preserve this historical land.
### 🎉 Exciting Tour of Tres Hermanos Ranch
In the fall of 2023, the Conservation Authority announced public tours of the ranch. I signed up immediately and, after a wait, was thrilled to join the tour in early June 2024.
### 🚍 The Tour Experience
Our 90-minute tour started at 9 a.m., traveling by shuttle bus with Chino Hills City Manager Benjamin Montgomery as our guide. We visited:
1. **Arnold Reservoir and Dam** - Learn about its significance from City of Industry City Manager Joshua Nelson and CNC Engineering Director James Cramsie.
2. **Ranch’s Barn Building** - Explore the old barn and hear local historian Paul Spitzzeri share tales of the ranch’s past, including an encounter with a resident rattlesnake!
3. **Majestic Oak Tree** - Retired Cal Poly Pomona Professor Dan Hostetler discussed the diverse plants and trees on the ranch.
### 🚜 Unforgettable Highlights
One of the tour's unexpected highlights was navigating a tunnel under Grand Ave., where numerous cattle sought refuge from the heat.
