MOTORS is the headline sponsor of The British Motor Show. We were at the show in Farnborough from 15-18th August 2024, hosting the MOTORS Family Zone and Kids Stage.
There were hundreds of cars at the show, so Steve Edwards went out to find the Top 5 Performance Classics at The British Motor Show. The cars that caught his eye were the Renault Clio Williams, BMW M5, Jaguar XJ220, Nissan Skyline GTR R34 and Ford Sierra RS Cosworth.
All five cars are performance classics and icons of automotive history, having won races and championships, broken world records and appeared on the big screen!
The Ford Sierra RS Cosworth is a high-performance version of the Ford Sierra that was built by Ford Europe from 1986 to 1992. It was the result of a Ford Motorsport project with the purpose of producing an outright winner for Touring Car racing in Europe. Regulations required that 5,000 units needed to be built to allow it to compete, so Ford took its then un-loved Sierra and made it suitable for competition.
The Ford Sierra RS Cosworth weighs 1,216 kg and has a 1,993cc engine, producing 204hp and 205 lbft of torque. All of which means 0 to 60 miles per hour in 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 150 miles per hour.
The Jaguar XJ220 was produced from 1992 until 1994, in collaboration with the specialist automotive and race engineering company Tom Walkinshaw Racing. The XJ220 was developed from a V12-engined 4-wheel drive concept car designed by an informal group of Jaguar employees working in their spare time. The XJ220 recorded a top speed of 217 mph (349 km/h) during testing by Jaguar at the Nardo test track in Italy, making it the fastest production car from 1992 to 1993.
The XJ220 has a 3.5 litre twin-turbo charged V6 engine producing 542hp, leading to a 0–60 mph time of 3.6 seconds. A total of just 275 cars were produced by the time production ended, each with a retail price of £470,000 in 1992, making it one of the most expensive cars of that time
The Renault Clio Williams is a car made for rallying. It was launched in 1993, as a limited edition of 3,800 cars - which was 1,300 more than Renault needed to use the car in rallying. The car was named after the then Renault-powered Formula One team WilliamsF1, though Williams had nothing to do with the design or engineering of the car with the modifications to the standard Clio being made by Renault Sport, Renault's motorsport division.
The naturally aspirated 2.0-litre inline-four engine produces 145 bhp and has a top speed of 134 mph. But most importantly, the Clio Williams is a car that was performance-tuned for handling. The Clio Willimas, with its distinctive blue paint and gold alloy combination is a true hot hatch legend.
The BMW M5 e28 is an automotive legend, creating an entire sub-set of cars. Saloon cars with supercar rivalling performance may be a familiar concept today, but they weren’t when this car was launched in 1984 at the Amsterdam motor show.
Despite its relatively subtle styling, this was a proper performance car that utilised the M88 3.5 litre straight-six engine from BMW’s first supercar, the M1. With a 0-60 time of 6.2 seconds and 278hp, the M5 was more powerful than the Ferrari 328 that was also available at the time. The BMW M5 was a ground-breaking car that demonstrated it was possible to blend performance with practicality.
The Nissan R34 Skyline is a legendary Japanese sports car that has achieved cult status worldwide. While part of its fame is due to its appearances in the Fast and Furious movie franchise - the Skyline was already a big deal before making it onto the big screen. At the time of its launch, the car was revered for its advanced technology, blistering performance, and iconic design. It also proved a dominant force on the track.
In standard form, the Skyline has all wheel drive and a twin-turbocharged 2.6-liter inline-six, pushing out 276bhp. It could do 0-60 in 4.9 seconds and was electronically limited to a top speed of 165mph. Due to its import only status in the UK, the Skyline has genuine allure, and is a real collectors item.
