Turkey’s main opposition party has claimed victory in Istanbul and Ankara in local elections. The opposition’s victory has inflicted the biggest defeat on President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in more than two decades. With more than 95 percent of ballot boxes opened in Istanbul on Mar 31, Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) said he had defeated the governing AK Party candidate by more than one million votes. In the capital Ankara, opposition mayor Mansur Yavas was so far ahead of his rival by 60 percent that he declared victory when less than half the votes were in. The results are being seen as a significant blow for Erdogan who had hoped to regain control of the cities after winning a third term as president last year.
