#servingtimeinfederalprison
Every now and again people tell me I seemed to enjoy serving time in federal prison. The reason people say that, I think, is because I tend to focus on all the benefits of the federal prison experience as opposed to obsessing over all the collateral damage that follows a prison record.
As I have expressed repeatedly, federal prison was productive because it required me to re examine my life, re prioritize my value system. I knew pretty quickly that life after prison would be harder if I did not use my time in prison wisely.
Mentors, both living and dead, helped me make the most of the experience. A living mentor, of course, is Michael Santos, whom I met in federal prison. Michael mentored me every day and he helped me map out what I wanted the rest of my life to look like. With that end vision in mind, we created a plan.
Other mentors included Viktor Frankl, Plato, Aristotle and Fyodor Dostoyevsky.
From the prison library on June 8th, 2008 at 1:43pm I wrote down the following quote in my prison journal:
"It seems, in fact, as though the second half of a man’s life is made up of nothing, but the habits he has accumulated during the first half.”
There are a lot of quotes that have stuck with me--none more than this one. Reading the quote was sobering, humbling. It reinforced that without real change, and not just happy talk, the second half or next 33 years of my life would be no different.
If you are going federal prison, find the benefits. Share the progress with your family, your support network. Demonstrate how you will emerge stronger and better.
Succeeding after federal prison, of course, requires hard work. It requires discipline and a commitment to follow your own path. It also requires a fuller and complete understanding of our tendencies as human beings.
My weaknesses and inability to resist temptation, led me to prison. In prison, I had to grow and ensure I corrected my bad past behaviors. You may not need to change anything. If you do, this video may help you.
