In this film the Den Food Bosch team member Marc explores the traditional apple orchards in the village of Gamburg. These orchards have been preserved in an abandoned state for the past decades, while still thriving and maintaining production. On the steep slopes terraces were installed to increase water absorption and decrease soil erosion. After a many generations of fruit production in these orchards the soil, water quality, natural wildlife have still been maintained.
On the walk through the village we encountered a local meat and vegetable farmer and asked her if we could help out with some work. To our surprise she took us to one of the terraced orchards to install electric fences where her cattle is now grazing. The cattle she uses are an Asian variety called Zebu, which are more adapted to grazing on the hills, slopes, and terraces of the area. Her cattle also manage a local natural reserve to maintain the savannah. Here the diversity in plant fauna and insect life has drastically increased after introducing the zebu.
Thank you very much!
