Sulaiman Alsakka spends most of his time working at Konditorei Damaskus, his family’s Syrian sweet shop. Ran by Sulaiman’s father and two uncles for 35 years, the shop was originally located in Homs, Syria. The family sold over 100 different kinds of Syrian confections until the war forced them to leave the country. Sulaiman was separated from his father and uncles and lived as a refugee in Egypt for two years with his mother, sister and two brothers. After the whole family moved to Berlin, they opened a new shop. Sulaiman, 19, mans the cash register, runs the Facebook page and talks to customers in German, English and Arabic. When he’s not working, he goes to school and hangs out with his friends, other Syrian refugees that he met after being relocated.
