With a decrease in pollinator species like bees and butterflies, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker (D-Mount Sinai) strives to help Long Island’s ecosystem with her Environmental Agriculture Educational Initiative. The initiative aims to attract more native pollinators like monarch butterflies and mining bees by planting more native plant species, starting with Heritage Park in Mount Sinai. Long Island Native Plant Initiative partnered with Anker to design the pilot garden and donate native plant species like milkweed. Anker hopes educating people about the importance of native plants will help heal the environment. Video by Giselle Barkley for Times Beacon Record Newspapers
