On the right bank of the River Maas in the Netherlands lies the historic city of Venlo.
Some of the historic buildings that were destroyed were never able to be rebuilt. Among the survivors are the Gothic Sint Martinuskerk Church, dating back to the 15th century; the Latin School of Ald Veschus, built in 1611; and a number of other architectural structures of the past centuries.
Venlo is mentioned in ninth-century documents as a trading post; it became one of the most important in the Maas-Rhine area, gaining city rights in 1343 and becoming a member of the Hanseatic League in 1375.
Because of its strategic importance, the city of Venlo was besieged several times. The most significant siege was that of 1702, which was carried out by Menno van Cohorn . Consequently, Venlo was included in the United Provinces by the Treaty of 1713 .
In 2003 Venlo was awarded the title "Greenest city of Europe".
In 2013, Venlo won the prestigious 'Best City Centre of the Netherlands' award.
Nowadays Venlo is a modern cultural, shopping, financial center and nice city for a weekend trip.
