To be able to test fiber spans using the OTDR requires a greater understanding of the equipment and its capabilities. As systems migrate to higher speeds the OTDR continues to be the critical tool used for characterizing an optical span for attenuation and distance. However, the increasing importance of optical return loss (ORL) and component reflectance testing needs to be addressed and added to standard OTDR tests. This session is focused on the application of your OTDR’s capabilities for measuring for optical return loss, reflectance, and testing through splitters used in FTTH/PON installations. In addition, the maintenance wavelengths assigned by the ITU will be discussed for acceptance testing and maintenance programs.
