Here I give an update on the circulating mutations of SARS-CoV-2 and what this means in regard to the mRNA vaccine efficiency for Covid19. The best way to avoid more mutations is to further halt the spread of the virus, as mutations are more likely as the number of infections increase.

If you missed my first video about mutations, please find it on my page to better understand how to read mutations & the definitions for various technical terms. Additionally, just because mutated forms are circulating does not mean the non-mutated forms have stopped spreading.

One important reminder from the new studies is to understand that these studies simply looked at antibody-antigen binding. So, although this parameter is decreased with the E484K mutation, this is not taking into account that our body’s own immune system will also work to fight the virus.

And, Dr. Elizabeth Murray also pointed out that increasing the amount of vaccines given and people building immunity will further slow the spread of mutations. As always, thanks for learning more about Covid19 and vaccines, I’m happy to hear any questions/comments!
